
An Overview
India currently having 3.34 million Kms of road network with world’s 2nd largest, it is one of the cost effective & ideal mode of transportation for freight & passengers, road carry nearly 65% of freight & 85% of passenger traffic.
Keeping in mind to build a target of 20 Km road per day (i.e. 7000 Km/year approximately) road Minister Shri C. P. Joshi has announced 7300km of contract in this fiscal year , worth about ` 57000 crores against the target of 10,000 Km & most of the contract planning to tendering under BOT (toll). Government has taken new Initiatives like PPP concessions with operation, Maintenance & tolling having a target of 4000 km by 2012, NAHI has raise tax free bond worth Rs 10,000 crores, Implementing Electronic Toll collection (ETC), GIS based satellite Imagery systems etc.
The NHDP which is being implemented in phases now looking to improve about 54500 km Major routes of national highway to meet international standards.
